Mr. Lady

Have you ever heard the song “Mr. Lady” by The Lunachicks? The topic of the song

discusses someone hiding their true self for years due to the norms of gender. There are a range of expectations about how males and females are supposed to behave, and a roster of options and opportunities for men and women. But what is gender identity? Gender identity can correlate with a person's assigned sex at birth or can differ from it. In this essay, I will agree thattransgender experience should be recognized and respected socially and culturally.

The all-girl punk band wrote this song about a transgender woman becoming her true self

after years of suppressing her want to live in “heels,” “hose” and “daytime lingerie” in 1997.

“I'm more than a woman, more than a man/I feel larger than life, you must understand.” This

lyric from the song is important because it explains how a transgender person might feel.

Transgender experience should be recognized and respected socially and culturally. With

the increased visibility of the community, it is important to gain an understanding of the unique experience and challenges faced by those that identify as transgender. This population faces a disproportionate amount of bullying in school, discrimination in employment, violence among peers, and mental health issues among the general population. We need to learn how to be more accepting of transgender individuals.
